Restart photoshop and turn off font preview. As a last resort, i saved my work and opened my file in a different photoshop 2020, only to find that it had indeed grouped behind the scenes, but had made my 4 files into 2 separate groups. Turning off font preview will prevent photoshop from rendering previews for any installed damaged fonts.

I think the problem is with the font you are substituting. Looks like it's about trouble with font cache. See reset the photoshop font cache.

\users\[user name]\appdata\roaming\adobe\adobe photoshop cc or cc 2014 delete the ct font cache folder tada, it's working now. If problem persists please disable the font. If you have any idea as to how i can unravel the problem, i would love to hear it.
